Hi! Welcome to Marilou's Method! My name is Marilou Lekanne: author, groomer and pet business coach. Spring is in the air…. The flowers are blooming, temperatures are rising. Let's talk: Spring Cleaning Your Mind & Business.
First off: Spring clean your mind, my dear fellow groomers! Let go of limiting beliefs and negative self-talk, like “I can't do this” or “I’m not good enough” or “I won't buy that mobile pet grooming van - what if I fail and won't be able to make payments?“ Instead tell yourself: “Today is a beautiful, successful day filled with wonderful pups and friendly clients!” ” and “I’m learning and I’m doing the best I can.” Catch yourself when you feel you’re going into a negative spiral or hear yourself speak negative self-talk. It’s time to change the words you speak and how you talk to yourself!
Second: Spring clean your clients! Not every client or dog is a good match with you and that's ok. Protect your energy, sanity and peace. If a client or dog drives you bonkers or causes you too much stress, it's time to gently let them go. If you find it difficult to come up with the right words, you can always ask AI to help you formulate them. Think of it this way: there’s millions of dog owners and plenty of dogs that need grooming. One or two clients that walk away, will not break your business but WILL give you back a whole lot of sanity.
Third: Spring clean your prices! If you haven't raised your prices since 2022, it's time to work on a short text or email or printed script that you will be raising your rates by a certain dollar amount or percentage by this date. Explain it in a single sentence and stand by it. Everything around us has gone up, from gas prices to supplies, to insurance rates and everything in between. If you find it hard to raise rates, start small. A $5 increase per dog doesn’t sound like a lot, but if you multiply that by 6 dogs a day and 5 days a week, it sure adds up!
Fourth: Spring clean your schedule. Working 6 days a week, 10 dogs a day and no vacation in sight is not a way to live. If you have too many dogs to groom, it might be time to hire an assistant to help you out. Schedule 2 days off per week to recharge and pencil in that vacation now!
Fifth: Spring clean your space: You clean every day and after every dog you groom, but when was the last time you really did a deep clean? I’m talking tub crates, walls, table legs, cabinets, the inside of your dryers and your air-conditioning unit. You’d be surprised where you find dog hair!
Last: Spring clean your goals: We can all get a little carried away with our ambitions at the start of a new year. The goals that you set in January might not make much sense today. In addition, too many goals might lead to you feeling paralyzed by overwhelm. Of all those goals, let’s pick just one! What is the one goal you’d like to work on the second half of this year? Write it down and make a plan to accomplish it! You’ll feel so good and accomplished when you get to finish it!
My goal is to make YOU more successful! Happy grooming!
