How mindset and mental toughness can set you apart from your competition

Rude client and you snapped back at her? Things keep breaking in your business and you’re so done with repairs all the time? Another slow financial month? Whatever your disappointment or frustration is, either with yourself, your business or a client, you need to learn how to handle it, how to face these moments head on, how to improve skills where needed and, most importantly, how to not fall apart! Many businesses fail, close down or go downhill, because the owner(s) did not invest in personal and mental business growth.

It’s a steep learning curve, for sure. It’s so easy to sit in the dumps or to give up, even if it’s just for the rest of the day, or to conclude that you were not cut out for this. But not you! You’re going to dust yourself off and be better at it next time, because you are choosing to invest time, resources and energy in learning the skills you need to improve. Why? Because you want this! And rest assured, things will get easier over time and that technique or skill you felt you were lacking? You’ll become a master at it! Just keep that visual of yourself learning how to drive a car or bicycle in your mind. Allow yourself time, allow yourself to fail and not be perfect, allow yourself an imperfect haircut, allow yourself a not-so-proud moment with your boss, co-worker or with a client… Allow yourself!

But be careful in taking a backseat! Always stay in the drivers seat and take control of your learning and your mind. Taking over an existing grooming salon with employees and you have no clue how to manage employees? Take a leadership class! Finding yourself mentally deflated every time someone speaks to you in any tone other than friendly? Having trouble setting boundaries with clients? Maybe it’s time to work thru some personal issues and to find a professional to help you with that. Take ownership of yourself, your skills and your personal and business growth! None of us were born with expertise. These are all learned skills and trades. If I could have classified myself twenty years ago, I would have labeled myself as an introvert, quite insecure about my talents, didn’t believe many people liked me very much, didn’t find myself to be very creative, definitely not a people-person, and definitely not a leader. This is what my current version of Marilou has to say about that assessment: “Look at how much you have grown into a confident person, a leader, a teacher, a caring friend with many loving friends, so creative, an amazing partner and a successful business owner!”

Be your own worst critic but ONLY as a means to propel yourself into action, to move forward and towards growth! At the same time, be gentle on your soul and give yourself grace. Rome was not built in one day. Remember that quote.
