Passion Before Profit? The Pet Grooming Business Mindset Shift

For the talented, big-hearted, and slightly underpaid groomer
Introduction
Let's talk about something that most grooming coaches are afraid to bring up. You got into this industry because you love dogs. You are talented, dedicated, and your clients' pets are practically family to you. That is a beautiful thing and it might also be quietly draining your bank account.
💜 The Heart of the Matter: You Chose This Career From the Heart
Pet grooming is one of the most heart-centered professions out there. Most groomers didn't stumble into this business chasing spreadsheets and quarterly earnings reports. They built their own businesses because they are genuinely talented at what they do, and they genuinely love the animals they care for. That passion is your superpower. It's what keeps your clients loyal, what makes their pets feel safe on your table, and what sets you apart from a conveyor-belt grooming chain.
Never lose that. Not for a second. But here's the plot twist nobody warned you about: the moment you opened your own business, you stopped being just a groomer. You became a CEO. And those two roles require two very different mindsets.
💹 The Reality Check: The Margins Are Getting Tighter
Take a look at what it actually costs to run a grooming business today. Fuel prices are up. Mobile unit payments don't pause when things get slow. Rent, maintenance, commercial insurance, liability coverage, supplies... all of it climbs year after year, quietly eating into what you take home.
Note: Rising expenses are the reality of running any business in 2026. Fuel costs, repairs, real estate, insurance premiums, and supplies; they all go one direction: up! And unlike your clients, they don't care how much you love dogs.
So what do many talented groomers do when the math stops working? They squeeze more dogs into the day. They work longer hours. They run themselves ragged trying to make the same income they made two years ago without ever touching their rates.
"Do big box stores extend their hours and work harder just to earn the same amount? No, because that's not how business works."
💡 The Mindset Shift: What Big Corporations Know That You Don't (Yet)
Here's something worth borrowing from the corporate playbook: when costs go up, prices go up. It has a name: cost-push inflation and every major company uses it without losing a single night of sleep. They don't apologize. They simply adjust their prices to protect their bottom line and their employees.
My dear fellow groomers, raising your grooming rates does not mean you care less about the dogs. It simply means you are running a real business.
Permission Granted: Lead Like a Business Owner
The fear of raising rates is real. But discomfort and logic are two very different things.
Key Insight: Your rates should at minimum match your income from last year. Ideally, they should exceed it. That's not greed; that's what business growth looks like.
👉 Your Permission Slip:
Please read these statements out loud for yourself and as often as needed!
I allow myself to raise my rates to keep up with rising costs.
I allow myself to protect my income without adding more dogs to my day.
I allow myself to run a profitable business.
I allow myself to let my tough business mind handle the finances while my heart handles the dogs and the clients.
The Bottom Line: Your Clients Will Understand
Will every single client cheer? Probably not. But most will stay because they are paying for you, not just a service. They trust you with the animal they love most. A business that is profitable and sustainable allows you to keep doing the work you love. Profitability isn't the enemy of passion. It's what keeps passion alive!
Closing Thought:
Use your passion where it shines: in the love, skill, and care you bring to every groom. Use your business mind where it counts: in the financial decisions that keep your doors open.
