The 9 Mindset Characteristics of Successful Groomers

Have you ever thought: “Why is that pet groomer THAT successful with only half of my technical grooming skills??!” Because that pet groomer and many others like them focus more on their mindset, business and communication skills. Sure, they’re good groomers as well, but maybe not half as good as you are. They do, however, succeed wildly and are more prosperous than many of their colleagues in the industry.

We have touched base on business and communication skills in other newsletters. Today I’d like to look at the 9 mindset characteristics of those groomers. Be honest, how many of these 9 characteristics do you possess and practice? Give yourself one point for each.

  1. They have a growth mindset: they are not just content with where they are at right now. They have ambition, drive and a plan to put it all into action.

  2. They focus on solutions: we all face problems when we’re operating our own pet businesses, but it’s easy to get stuck and dwell on these problems. Successful minds think: “ok, we got a problem. What are some solutions we can come up with?” Even if these solutions are temporary.

  3. They take responsibility: they know what needs to be done and the tasks that they are responsible for. They roll up their sleeves and get sh*t done!

  4. They embrace challenges: there will be plenty of challenges coming your way in your pet business journey, but you can choose to hide in a corner and cry about them or to face them head-on, stay calm and collected and embrace the challenge.

  5. They never stop learning: whether it’s grooming techniques, business skills, scaling your business, client communication, accounting and bookkeeping… these groomers never stop learning. They continue to take courses and learn from mentors.

  6. They stay focused: it’s easy to get distracted, especially with everything that’s going on in the news, in the economy, on the internet and on social media, but successful groomers keep their eye on the gold.

  7. They know things will happen and they’re prepared. You can plan financially, mentally and with scheduling. When that next big repair happens, they’re ready for it!

  8. They stay positive, no matter what. When you look at the threads in many grooming Facebook groups , it’s easy to go down that negative spiral: people suck, the economy, it’s so hard, …. But the successful groomer knows when to walk away from all that negative talk and to stay positive no matter what other people around her/him want her to believe.

  9. They factor in enough self-care. You can’t function well when you don’t sleep enough, don’t eat well and don’t factor in personal time for you, your own dogs and your family. If you only go, go, go, go! Eventually the quality of your work and your business will suffer. Successful groomers know that and schedule in enough self-care.
