GROOMER WELLNESS
Your well-being ispart of the job.
A wellness guide for grooming business owners who care deeply for every dog - and deserve that same care for themselves.
You got into grooming because you love dogs. But somewhere between back-to-back doodles, no-show clients, and skipping lunch (again), the joy can quietly slip away. The good news? Burnout isn't inevitable. A few smart boundaries can change everything.
YOUR SANITY-SAVING TIPS
Cap your daily dog count
More dogs does not equal more money if you're too exhausted to do great work! Choose a number that lets you finish the day still smiling. Many solo groomers thrive at 6 - 8 dogs a day and charge accordingly.
Work fewer days on purpose
Four days of great grooming beats five days of survival mode. A built-in weekday off gives you time to recharge, run errands, and actually enjoy your life. In addition, when you have the need to reschedule or cancel a client and you don't have availability for many days or weeks ahaea, this extra day can take off the stress.
Balance your day's lineup
Don't stack all the heavy breeds, like Doodles, back-to-back. Mix in a few bath-only or short-haired dogs between the big full grooms. Your body, your attitude, and your family will thank you come dinner time.
Actually eat lunch. Seriously.
Block it on your schedule like any other appointment. A real break - away from the tub - improves your focus and mood more than you'd expect. You cannot pour from an empty bowl.
Learn the power of "no"
Some dogs truly test your patience. Some breeds destroy your body. Some clients drain your soul. You are allowed to decline. The right clients for your business are out there - make room for them.
Plan (and save for) real time off
Vacations don't happen by accident for self-employed groomers. Put them on the calendar first, then work backward to save for the income gap. Rest is part of running a sustainable business. Your clients will stay and wait for you and most will actually wish you a happy vacation!
Pay someone else to do the things you hate
Taxes stressing you out? Hire a bookkeeper. Deep cleaning the salon eating your Sunday? Hire a cleaner. Paying for help in your weak spots is an investment in your longevity - not a luxury.
