I Just Came Home From Bali and This Is What I learned...

Every time I travel, I'm reminded how much is out there and how much is there to explore far beyond the walls of our businesses and personal lives. We build these little boxes for ourselves: the same routines, the same way of grooming, the same way of doing business, and handling problems... and sometimes we stay stuck in this box we built for ourselves.

Then you land somewhere new, watch other people and other cultures solve everyday problems in completely different ways, and your brain wakes up. Suddenly the challenge you've been stuck on for months has new possible answers. That's what stepping away from my business does for me. That's what traveling does for me. It opens up new pathways in my brain, it makes me see my own world and problems from a new perspective and with a fresh set of eyes. It allows me to relate to my business as if I were a stranger looking into it: objectively and calmly.

I realize that not all of us are world travelers, but we do all need that escape and a way to step back from our own lives in order to see things more clearly and calmly. Only you can decide for yourself what that is. I urge you to seek that out.

Your homework:

1. Get out of your box. It doesn't have to be Bali. Visit another shop, take a class outside grooming, learn a completely new skill (sourdough making anyone?) or walk a new town.

2. Ask one "when did you last?" question of yourself. When did you last take a real break? Or: when did you last do something nice for yourself?

3. Write down one problem you're stuck on, then look at it like a stranger would. What would he/she see and feel?

I'd love to hear from you. What's one thing in your business you'd change if you had a week away? Hit reply and tell me. I'll respond to each and every reply that comes to my inbox (even if it might sometimes take a few days).

With respect, admiration, and a firm belief in your worth,
